A great story to tell is one of John Wooden’s response at a coach’s clinic a number of years ago when asked, “What part of the game is most connected to winning?” for which coach responded with, “Some say the team that out rebounds usually wins the game. Some say the team that has the least number of turnovers usually wins the game. Some say the team that makes the most free throws usually wins the game. Still others say the team that shoots the highest field goal percentage usually wins the game. From my experience, I say the team that scores the most points usually wins the game.”

Truth be told, all championship offensive attacks have something in common-sound principles on which they are founded. Once this foundation is established, it’s a matter of effective instruction, repetition, and execution. A solid playbook is a wonderful record which drives the very foundations our team success feeds upon. A sound strategy should always be recorded for future consideration and use. A goal won’t do the team much good without steps to accomplish it. Vision without strategy is little more than a daydream. The value of a strategy is that it brings process to the vision.

In an article of Time Magazine eBay’s success is explained as, “an online middleman between buyers and sellers, eBay is building an empire that bricks and mortar could not have touched.” Much in the same manner a basketball team can be linked to the coach and a sound strategy foundation through the proper playbook. In closing, a basketball playbook should include detailed diagrams, strengths and weaknesses, and non linear logic as to why a certain play is appropriate for particular situation within a season, conference tournament, or playoff game.
